The frangipani is a shrub or tree native to Central America. Belonging to the Plumeria genus (after the French botanist, Charles Plumier), it produces a wide range of different flowers, ranging from yellow to deep pink. Its common name comes from an Italian marquis, Frangipani, who once used this plant in a perfume.
The red or common frangipani (Plumeria rubra) is very widespread in the Caribbean, where it grows in many gardens, as well as in the wild. While the shrubs wood is used in marquetry, its delicate, stunningly beautiful flowers give off a subtle scent that is used both in perfume and in food. Frangipani flowers are reputed to possess a multitude of beneficial properties, be these soothing, invigorative, softening, purifying or nourishing.
